What does the Mercedes-Benz Driver Assistance Package include?

By Alfredo, sales consultant at Mercedes-Benz of Pompano · Updated October 15, 2026

The Driver Assistance Package is the option that turns a Mercedes-Benz's cruise control into a highway co-pilot: it keeps your distance, helps steer in the lane, changes lanes when you signal and, on the larger models, adds two extra crash-protection systems. Which version you get depends on the car. The C-Class, E-Class, CLE, GLC, GLA, GLB and EQB offer the package. Newer models like the 2027 GLE, the GLC Electric and the 2027 CLA offer MB.DRIVE ASSIST instead, and the S-Class and EQS Sedan include it as standard.

What you already get without the package

Every model below already has a solid set of safety systems before you add anything. On the 2027 GLC 300 4MATIC, the 2027 E 350 4MATIC and the 2027 CLE 300 4MATIC Coupe, Mercedes-Benz USA lists these as standard:

  • DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control, which keeps a set distance from the car ahead
  • Active Brake Assist, which warns you of a likely front collision and can brake on its own
  • Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning Assist, which after you park also warns you before a door opens into a passing car, bike or pedestrian
  • ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE and PRE-SAFE Sound
  • PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist

Where the standard list is shorter

On the 2026 C 300 4MATIC Sedan, adaptive cruise is not standard. Mercedes-Benz USA lists DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control as a stand-alone option, and it comes with the Driver Assistance Package. The rest of the list above is standard.

On the 2026 GLA 250 and GLB 250, standard equipment includes Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Crosswind Assist and a rearview camera. DISTRONIC is again a stand-alone option or part of the package. If adaptive cruise matters to you on one of these, check the car's option list before you fall for it.

What the package adds on the C-Class, E-Class, CLE and GLC

This is the full version of the package, and the one I'd point you to if you drive I-95 or the Turnpike every week. In plain language, Mercedes-Benz USA lists:

  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC: the upgraded adaptive cruise. It can slow down to a full stop in traffic and pull away again.
  • Extended Restart in Stop-and-Go Traffic: in a longer traffic pause, the car can pull away on its own after up to 30 seconds instead of waiting for you to tap the pedal.
  • Active Steering Assist: with DISTRONIC on, it helps keep the car centered in its lane, even through gentle curves. Your hands stay on the wheel.
  • Active Lane Change Assist: on a multilane highway, hold the turn signal and the car moves over by itself once the lane is clear.
  • Automatic Lane Change: the car can signal and pass slower traffic on its own, and move over ahead of your exit when navigation is on. Listed for the C-Class, E-Class and CLE, not the GLC.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist: beyond warning you, they can steer you back if you drift or start to change lanes into a car you didn't see.
  • Active Brake Assist with Turning and Cross-Traffic Function: watches for cars crossing at an intersection and for pedestrians, even while you're turning.
  • Evasive Steering Assist: if you swerve to avoid a pedestrian, it adds steering force to help you make the move and straighten out.
  • Active Emergency Stop Assist: if your hands are off the wheel too long and you don't respond to the alerts, it slows the car to a stop.
  • Active Speed Limit Assist and Traffic Sign Assist: read the posted limit and adjust your cruise speed to it.
  • Route-based Speed Adaptation: slows down ahead of curves, roundabouts and exits using the navigation map. Listed for the C-Class, E-Class and CLE, not the GLC.
  • PRE-SAFE PLUS: a rear radar spots a car about to hit you from behind, tightens the front seat belts and holds the brakes if you're stopped.
  • PRE-SAFE Impulse Side: before a side impact, a chamber in the front seat's side bolster inflates to move you away from the door.

The compact version: GLA, GLB and EQB

The compact SUVs get a shorter package. On the 2026 GLA 250 and GLB 250, it includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, PRE-SAFE, PRE-SAFE PLUS, PRE-SAFE Sound and Route-based Speed Adaptation. The 2025 EQB lists the same set.

What's missing compared with the bigger cars: the lane changes on signal, the cross-traffic and turning braking, Evasive Steering Assist and PRE-SAFE Impulse Side. For a city car that sees some highway, the compact package still covers the part most people use: adaptive cruise with steering help.

MB.DRIVE ASSIST on the newest models

The 2027 GLE, the 2027 GLC Electric and the 2027 CLA don't offer a Driver Assistance Package. Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist Plus and a lane keeping function are standard, and the option is called MB.DRIVE ASSIST. On the GLE and the GLC Electric it adds Steering Assist, Lane Change Assist and Proactive Lane Change Assist, which passes slower cars and moves over for your exit on its own. On the 2027 CLA it adds Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist.

On the 2027 S-Class and the 2027 EQS Sedan, MB.DRIVE ASSIST is standard. On the 2026 G 550, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist are all standard. On the 2027 EQE SUV, most of the same systems come inside the Exclusive Trim package.

On these newer models, Mercedes-Benz USA sells the systems as Digital Extras. They are activated through a personal Mercedes me ID, an initial term comes with a new car bought or leased from a Mercedes-Benz dealer, and most features can be renewed for a fee once that term ends. Mercedes-Benz USA also says the offers are not transferable to later owners or lessees.

Is it worth it?

If you spend real time on I-95, I-595 or the Turnpike, yes. The combination you'll feel every day is the upgraded DISTRONIC with Steering Assist and the extended restart: in stop-and-go traffic the car keeps its distance, stops, pulls away and stays in its lane while you keep a hand on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

If most of your driving is short trips around town, the standard equipment already covers forward collision braking, blind spot warnings and, on most models, adaptive cruise. Then the package is about the two extra crash-protection systems on the bigger cars, PRE-SAFE PLUS and PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, and that's a personal call.

None of this makes the car self-driving. Mercedes-Benz USA is clear that these systems need you holding the wheel, watching the road and ready to take over at any time.

Buying used: how to tell if a car has it

On this site, open any car's page and tap "Everything on this car". The options and packages list shows the Driver Assistance Package or MB.DRIVE ASSIST when the car has it. The window sticker at the store is the final word.

On a used car from the newer models, ask which Digital Extras are active and until when. Since Mercedes-Benz USA says the offers don't transfer to later owners, you may need to activate or renew them in your own Mercedes me account.

Tell me you want to try it and I'll take the car on I-95 with you and set up DISTRONIC and Steering Assist, so you can feel it before you decide.

Questions people ask

Is DISTRONIC standard on a Mercedes-Benz?
On many models, yes: the 2027 GLC 300, E-Class, CLE, GLE, GLS, S-Class and EQS Sedan list it as standard. On the 2026 C 300, GLA 250 and GLB 250 it's a stand-alone option or part of the Driver Assistance Package.
Can a Mercedes change lanes by itself?
With the Driver Assistance Package on the C-Class, E-Class, CLE and GLC, it can change lanes when you hold the turn signal. The C-Class, E-Class and CLE can also pass slower traffic on their own, as can the GLE and GLC Electric with MB.DRIVE ASSIST.
Does the 2027 GLE have the Driver Assistance Package?
Not by that name. The 2027 GLE offers MB.DRIVE ASSIST, which adds Steering Assist, Lane Change Assist and Proactive Lane Change Assist to the standard Distance Assist DISTRONIC.
Is a Mercedes with the Driver Assistance Package self-driving?
No. These systems help with steering, braking and speed, but you keep your hands on the wheel and stay responsible for driving at all times.
