What Do Mercedes-Benz Model Names Mean?
A Mercedes-Benz name packs the model line, the power tier, the drive system and sometimes the sub-brand into a few characters. Here is how to read one, using names exactly as Mercedes-Benz USA lists them on mbusa.com in October 2026.
The letters: the model line
The letters up front are the model line. On mbusa.com the sedans are the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class, the CLE comes as a coupe and cabriolet, and the CLA appears as a sedan and a coupe. Every name that starts with GL — GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS — is an SUV, and the G-Class is its own SUV line.
Mercedes-Benz doesn't publish a size rule on those pages, but the specs show a clear ladder. Within each family, the car grows as the letter climbs (2026 C 300; 2027 for the rest):
- C 300 Sedan: 112.8-inch wheelbase, 187.0 inches long
- E 350 Sedan: 116.6-inch wheelbase, 194.9 inches long
- S 580 4MATIC Sedan: 126.6-inch wheelbase, 209.5 inches long
- GLC 300 4MATIC SUV: 113.1-inch wheelbase, 185.7 inches long
- GLE 350 4MATIC SUV: 117.9-inch wheelbase, 193.8 inches long
- GLS 450 4MATIC SUV: 123.4-inch wheelbase, 205.4 inches long, seats 6 (7 optional)
The numbers: a tier, not engine size
Mercedes-Benz says the numbers now represent performance tiers and equipment levels within each family; they used to indicate engine size in liters. The current specs make the point:
- C 300, E 350, GLC 300 4MATIC and GLE 350 4MATIC: all a 2.0L inline-4 turbo with mild hybrid drive, 255 hp
- E 450 4MATIC Sedan: 3.0L inline-6 turbo with mild hybrid drive, 375 hp
- S 580 4MATIC Sedan: 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid drive, 530 hp
4MATIC, 4MATIC+ and cars with neither
4MATIC is Mercedes-Benz's all-wheel-drive system. 4MATIC+ is a more advanced, fully variable version reserved for high-performance Mercedes-AMG models; on the AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ SUV it can send up to 100% of torque to the rear wheels. Not every AMG gets the plus: the AMG C 43 Sedan uses AMG Performance 4MATIC.
No 4MATIC in the name means two-wheel drive, and which axle depends on the car. The C 300 Sedan and E 350 Sedan are rear-wheel drive. The CLA 220 Hybrid Sedan is front-wheel drive.
e, Hybrid and Electric
A lowercase e after the number marks a plug-in hybrid. Mercedes-Benz USA describes the GLC 350e 4MATIC SUV as an EV for around-town commuting and a turbocharged SUV for long distances.
The word Hybrid covers different hardware. The CLA 220 Hybrid Sedan uses 48-volt hybrid assist built into its transmission. The AMG E 53 HYBRID Sedan is listed as a Performance Plug-In Hybrid. And many gas models carry mild hybrid drive with no hybrid badge at all, including the C 300, E 350, E 450 and S 580.
Full electrics come in two naming styles on mbusa.com. The EQ prefix, which Mercedes-Benz uses on some all-electric models, stays on the EQB, EQE SUV and EQS. Newer electrics use the regular model name plus Electric: GLC 400 4MATIC Electric SUV, CLA 250+ Electric Sedan and G 580 Electric SUV.
Mercedes-Benz USA doesn't define the plus sign in names like CLA 250+ and EQS 450+. On both of those, it marks a single rear electric motor and rear-wheel drive.
Mercedes-AMG: 43, 53, 63 and S E PERFORMANCE
Mercedes-AMG is the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, based in Affalterbach, Germany. Its handcrafted engines follow a one man, one engine approach: a single builder assembles each one and signs a plaque attached to it.
AMG names use two digits, and like the regular numbers they mark a tier, not displacement:
- AMG C 43 Sedan: handcrafted 2.0L inline-4 turbo, 416 hp
- AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ SUV: AMG-enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo with hybrid assist, 443 hp
- AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ SUV: handcrafted 4.0L V8 biturbo with hybrid assist, 603 hp
- AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE Sedan: handcrafted 2.0L inline-4 plus a rear electric motor, 671 hp
AMG Line and Mercedes-Maybach
S after an AMG number typically indicates extra power. E PERFORMANCE signals a hybrid powertrain developed with Formula 1 technology; the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE is listed as a Performance Plug-In Hybrid.
AMG Line is not an AMG model. It's an option on regular models that Mercedes-Benz USA describes as sporty chassis and cabin upgrades wrapped in athletic lower body styling and AMG wheels. It's standard on the CLE 450 and GLE 450 and optional on the CLE 300 and GLE 350. A GLE 450 with AMG Line is still a GLE 450.
Mercedes-Maybach is a separate sub-brand on mbusa.com: the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC, S 680 4MATIC, GLS 600 SUV and EQS 680 SUV. The Maybach S 580 4MATIC uses a 530-hp 4.0L V8, like the S 580 4MATIC Sedan, on a 133.7-inch wheelbase — 7.1 inches longer — with power Executive rear seats.
Put it together and AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ SUV reads as: Mercedes-AMG model, GLC SUV line, the 53 tier, AMG's fully variable all-wheel drive.
Questions people ask
